2024 Threshold Increase

From 4 April 2024, the general threshold rose from £26,200 to £38,700 - a 48% increase. The new entrant rate rose from £20,960 to £30,960.

How the going rate works

Your salary must meet whichever is higher: the general threshold (£38,700) or the going rate for your specific occupation code. Some senior roles have much higher going rates.

New entrant eligibility

You qualify for the 80% new entrant rate if you're under 26, on a Student or Graduate visa, or are a new medical or dental postgraduate. The rate is £30,960.

Tradeable points

Shortage occupations and PhD-level roles used to get discounts. From April 2024, most shortage occupation discounts were removed. Check the latest Immigration Salary List.

What Is the Skilled Worker Visa Salary Threshold?

To qualify for a UK Skilled Worker visa, your job offer must meet a minimum salary threshold set by the Home Office. Since April 2024, the general threshold is £38,700 per year (or £15.88/hour), a significant increase from the previous £26,200 limit.

However, the threshold is not the same for every job. Each occupation has a "going rate" - a minimum salary specific to that job title based on its SOC 2020 occupation code. Your salary must meet whichever is higher: the general threshold or your occupation's going rate.

New entrant discount: If you are under 26, switching from a Student or Graduate visa, or in the first three years of a registered profession (such as nursing or teaching), you may qualify at 80% of the going rate - i.e. a minimum of £30,960.

Only your guaranteed basic salary counts. Overtime, bonuses, tips, and discretionary allowances are excluded. London weighting and guaranteed location allowances may count if they are contractual and pensionable.
